Card 4 is honoring the only civilian in the hero cards to date. He is the world famous Dr. E.O. Lawrence, of Canton, S.D. Dr Lawrence invented the cyclotron and the color TV tube. Along with his brother Dr. John Lawrence, he pioneered the use of radiation to treat cancer. He was a strong believe in the peaceful use of the atom, even he was one of themajor scientists at the famous Manhattan Project that developed the A-Bomb.
The famous Lawrence laboratory at UC Berkeley was named after him, as well as the element Lawrencium #103 . When he died in 1958, President Dwight D. Eisenhower said, "His loss is a tragic one for the United States an for the entire free world." For more information go to: http://www.lbl.gov/

Card 7 Honors Lt. George McGovern. Lt. Mcgovern's brave story is found in the book WILD BLUE:THE MEN AND BOYS WHO FLEW B24'S OVER GERMANY 1944-45. After the war, he became a U.s. Senator and, in 1972, he was the Democratic nominee for U.S. President. He was special delegate to the U.N., Director of the Food For Peace Program, and was honored with the highest award an American civilian can receive, the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
